When people think of Maryland, they often think of the Chesapeake Bay or Baltimore. In fact, Maryland is a fascinating state. The state has many fun attractions and incredible scenery. The state is home to the Naval Academy and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the President’s hospital. Maryland also offers gambling including casinos and horse races. The state has some of the best casinos in the United States. One of the Triple Crown races, the Preakness is held in Maryland.
Maryland is home to the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens were named after the Edgar Allen Poe poem, the Raven. The official team sport of Maryland is lacrosse, while the official sport is jousting.
One of the most popular local brews in the country is National Bohemian Beer. Also called Natty Boh, this beer was originally brewed in Maryland and the state still makes up more than 90 percent of its sales. Following the end of prohibition, Natty Boh’s major competitor was Gunther. There is even a story that Natty Boh’s mascot only has one eye because Gunther’s got it. Natty Boh also invented the six-pack, explaining that four were too few and eight too many.
Maryland residents seem to live a long time. The State’s Board of Elections has more than 40 people on the rolls who are 100 years or older.
There’s even a story about the Maryland state flag. Maryland’s flag features symbols of English heraldry and is based on the Calvert family coat of arms. The flag is beloved by Maryland natives and is featured as a logo for everything from schools to sports.
Maryland’s diverse geography includes terrain from beaches to mountains and even sand dunes. The state also enjoys all four seasons and is often referred to as America in Miniature.
One of the most intriguing areas in Maryland is Assateague State Park. This park, located on Assateague Island is the only oceanfront park in Maryland. Visitors to the park are often surprised to see the feral ponies that are residents of the park. These wild horses are beautiful, but should never be fed or approached.
Maryland offers something for almost everyone. From the mountains of the Piedmont to the beaches of Assateague, Maryland is a truly beautiful state.
